Skills for Life is the theme of this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 6-12 February.
As an organisation, we are proud to run an apprenticeship programme supporting employees to upskill or take the first step on their chosen career path.
Jack Mennear joined Livability Nash College last September as an IT Support Apprentice and is working towards a Level 3 Information Communications Technician apprenticeship.
Here he talks about why he chose an apprenticeship.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I chose to do an apprenticeship as I wanted to earn an income alongside learning. I’ve seen my older brother undergo an apprenticeship when he was still figuring out what he wanted to do, and it has worked out extremely well for him. I knew that I wanted to work in IT and it was just a matter of finding the right organisation to work for that would help me progress the most.
How would you describe your role at Nash College?
No two days are the same; so I can never be bored. A new problem with a new solution arises daily, which has been great for me as it’s helped me learn so much in a short period of time. The environment is very friendly and welcoming, and everyone is always grateful.
What skills have you learned that you have been able to apply in the workplace?
Learning to prioritise has been a huge skill I have gained during my time here, which has been very important as some things need immediate action, whereas others can wait. I know not to blindly take on too much work and focus on what is in front of me before moving on, resulting in getting more done.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy the fact that I’m not always glued to my desk. I’m often getting up and interacting with people, dealing with hardware issues like replacing computers and screens, setting up docking stations and so on. Having that sociable aspect of it helps build relations with colleagues and really emphasises the friendly environment.
What are the benefits of doing an apprenticeship?
You are able to earn a salary alongside working towards a nationally recognised qualification, all while gaining the experience to be able to move on to a more advanced and higher paid role by the end of the apprenticeship. In my opinion, the best option to take following further education.
How has it prepared you for taking the next step in your IT career?
The main thing is the experience. Reading and studying can only do so much if you don’t get the chance to put what you’ve learnt into practice. Now that I have worked in this field I am much more confident in my IT capabilities and I know by the end of my apprenticeship I will be fully prepared to take the next step in my IT career.
What would you say to someone thinking of taking an apprenticeship?
I would say take the opportunity! I have seen it work for family, friends and now myself. It’s definitely worth a try, because even in a worst case scenario you have the opportunity to change your mind.
